Haemoglobin

• haemoglobin has two alpha chains and two beta chains
• shape is vital to carry oxygen from lungs to tissues
• has a prosthetic group of Haem which contains Fe2+ ions and is responsible for colour
• most of the haemoglobin structure is alpha helix
• a conjugated protein is a protein plus a prosthetic group
• each haemoglobin molecule binds to 4 oxygen molecules
