  • a phagocyte is a type of white blood cell that carries out pahgocytosis
  • they're the first cells to respond to an immune system trigger
    1. a phagocyte recognises the foreign antigens pathogen
  • 2. the cytoplasm of the phagocyte moves around the pathogen, engulfing it
  • 3. the pathogen is now contained in a phagocytic vacuole, in the cytoplasm of the phaogcyte
  • 4. a lysosome fuses with the phagocytic vacuole, and releases lysozymes into it which break down the pathogen
  • 5. the phagocyte presents the pathogen's antigens on its cell surface membrane to alert other immune system cells
