  • how do typical work
    • they bind to complementary dopamine (D2) receptors on the postsynaptic membrane, preventing dopamine molecules from binding to these sites. resulting in an inhibitory effect, returning neurotransmission to a normal level.
    • eg.chloroprozamine
    • primarily treat positive symptoms
  • how do a-typical drugs work
    • Blocking dopamine receptors, but rapidly dissociate from them, temporary blocking allows low levels of dopamine activity as it can still competitively bind with d2 receptors
    eg. clozpaine
affects both positive and negative symptoms
  • side effects of typcial
    • Extrapyramidal side effects, such as tardive dyskinesia (parkinsonisms, movement disorder)
  • side effects of a typical
    • Weight gain - can result in type 2 diabetes and fatty liver disease
