Good Nucleophile and Solvents

Cards (5)

  • A nucleophile is considered strong when it has a negative charge.
  • A strong base is usually a good nucleophile in the right-to-left direction on the periodic table, while the solvent determines the verticle pattern.
  • There is a general decrease in reactivity when bulky groups generate steric hindrance.
  • When the nucleophile is in a polar protic solvent, the vertical pattern is in the up-to-down direction, opposite of the basicity pattern.
  • While the nucleophile is in a polar aprotic solvent, the vertical pattern is down-to-up, following the same direction as the basicity pattern.
