primary economic activity

Cards (18)

  • Primary sector is the first stage of production, where raw materials are extracted from natural resources.
  • farming, fishing and forestry are examples of primary economic activity
  • climate has a major effect on the physical landscapes eg.hot climate=desert area
  • height:mountainous areas influence farming,weather,human activity
  • sea coasts:coastlines are influenced by erosion process of the sea
  • human activity: humans can change the physical landscape eg.planting flowers
  • types of farming
    • pastoral farming
    • arable farming
    • mixed farming
    • forestry
  • pastoral farming: farming of animals for meat and milk, best suited for flat fertile land
  • arable farming is farming that uses land for growing crops, such as wheat, corn, and rice
  • mixed farming is when farmers grow crops and keep animals on the same farm
  • forestry: planting, growing, harvesting, and managing trees.often planted on the lower slopes of mountains
  • farming in Dublin-physical factors
    climate-cool temperature oceanic climate.
    not too hot in summer
    not too cold in winter
Soils-soils in dublin are very fertile[brown earth soils]-perfect for farming
height/slope-dublin is relatively flat except for dublin mountains in the south
farming in the south of the county- mainly cattle grazing and forestry due to mountains
  • fishing is an important industry for areas where the soil is not good fertile enough for farming eg castletownbere,co.cork
  • sustainable irrigation in New zealand: irrigation helps bring water to areas that does not have enough water and may experience drought
eg.the water can be transported by pipes and canals
  • overfishing: even though fish are renewable, they are being overfished.
this can lead to species becoming extinct.
  • why is over fishing happening?
    1. improved ships: supertrawlers can catch a large amount of fish
    2. technology: supertrawlers have a sonar equipment that can easily locate larger groups of fish
    3. cranes:motorized cranes can haul in huge nets of fish
    4. nets:nets have small holes so small fish cannot escape to reproduce.
  • aquaculture:a sustainable way of fishing and farming fish eg.fish farm
  • forestry
a sustainable forest is carefully managed.trees that are cut down and are replaced immediatly.
illegal deforestation is a major problem.
    {it damages the local economy for communities who rely on forestry}
increased demand for food means that forests are being cut down to mkae farms.
