Amendments

• 1st Amendment- freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition
• Establishment Clause (1st amendment)- Congress cannot establish national religion
• Free Exercise Clause- Congress shall make no law prohibiting free exercise of religion
• 2nd Amendment- Right to bear arms
• 3rd Amendment- No forced quartering of soldiers
• 4th Amendment- prohibits unreasonable search and seizure
• 5th Amendment- guarantees right to grand jury, protects against double jeopardy, protects against self-incrimination, due process (federal government due process)
• 6th Amendment- right to speedy and public trial, right to an impartial jury, right to be informed of accusers, charges, and evidence, right to a counsel
• 7th Amendment- Right to trial by jury in civil cases
• 8th amendment- protects against excessive bail, fines, cruel and unusual punishments
• 9th Amendment- rights not listed in the Constitution are still protected by the Constitution
• 10th Amendment- powers not delegated to the national government, nor prohibited to states, are reserved for the states and people
• 13th Amendment-abolished slavery
• 14th amendment- grants citizenship to all born/naturalized, states cannot make laws that discriminate, can't deprive life, liberty, property without due process,
• Due Process Clause- government cannot take away a person's life, liberty, or property without due process of law
• Equal Protection Clause- prohibits the government from discriminating under the law
• 15th Amendment- granted African American men the right to vote (right to vote can't be denied based on race)
• 19th Amendment- Granted women the right to vote (right to vote can't be denied based on sex)
• 17th Amendment- established direct election of US senators
• 24th Amendment- Abolished poll taxes (taxes on voters during federal elections)
• 26th Amendment- voting age 18
