States of matter

Cards (5)

  • 3 main states of matter:
    1. Solid
    2. LIquid
    3. Gas
  • Arrangement in a solid:
    • Closely packed together
    • Arranged in a regular manner
    • Strong intermolecular forces of attraction
    • High intermolecular potential energy and KE
Movement: Vibrate and rotate about their fixed positions.
  • How are particles in a solid arranged?
Closely packed together and in a regular manner
  • Arrangement in a liquid:
    • Loosely packed together
    • Less regular manner
    • Arranged in clusters
    Movement:
    • They rotate, vibrate & translate within the container. They also slide freely pass each other.
    • Weak intermolecular forces of attraction between one another.
    • Higher KE than in a solid
    • Lower intermolecular potential energy as cmpared to those in a solid
  • Arrangement in a gas:
    • Disordely arranged
    • Very far from one another
    • Very weak intermolecular forces of attraction
    • Very high KE
    • Very low intermolecular potential energy
Movement: Move randomly at high speed
