  • Sexual reproduction is where genetic material from two organisms combine DNA to create genetically different offspring.
  • in sexual reproduction produce the gametes during meiosis
  • in each gamete there are 23 chromosomes half the usual 46 in one cell
  • Asexual reproduction requires one parent that creates genetically identical offspring
  • Asexual reproduction happens by Mitosis
  • The new cell is a clone of the original one
  • Advantages of Sexual Reproduction:
    • A better chance of surviving a change in environment
    • they become better adapted and can breed and pass on genes. this is known as natural selection.
    • selective breeding can be used to speed up natural selection therefore producing more food.
  • Advantages of Asexual reproduction:
    • Only requires one parent
    • requires less time because no mate is needed
    • faster
    • identical offspring can be produced in favourable conditions
  • Malaria is caused by mosquitos. the parasite produces sexually when it's in the mosquito but asexually when it's in the human host
  • fungi releases spores which become new fungi when they land in the right environment.
  • seeds are produced sexually and asexually. strawberries produce 'runners' which are identical new strawberry plants
