Atoms, Elements and Compounds

Cards (9)

  • An atom is the smallest part of a chemical element that can exist.
  • Protons have a positive charge (+1), while electrons have a negative charge (-1).
  • Atoms are made up of protons, neutrons, and electrons.
  • Neutrons do not carry an electrical charge (0)
  • An element is a substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means.
  • An example of elements are helium (He), hydrogen (H), oxygen (O), neon (Ne) and more.
  • Compound examples include water (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), ammonia (NH3), sulfuric acid (H2SO4), sodium chloride (NaCl), calcium oxide (CaO), etc.
  • Elements can exist as single atoms or combine to make compounds.
  • A compound is formed when two or more different elements chemically bond together.
