Control of Eukaryotic cell cycle

• checkpoints in cell cycle:

  • G1 checkpoint
  • G2 checkpoint
  • M phase checkpoint
• Control mechanisms at the checkpoints ensure that damaged DNA is repaired before proceeding to the next stage, and that each stage of the cell cycle is completed before the following stage is initiated
• Genes involved in normal regulation of cell division

  • proto-oncogenes
  • tumour suppressor genes
• Proto-oncogenes: normal genes that codes for proteins that stimulate (accelerate) normal cell growth and division
• Tumour suppressor genes: (critical role in regulating when cells are allowed to divide and increase in number) normal genes that code for proteins that prevent uncontrolled cell division
