• One of the skeptics arguments is from optical illusions and the untrustworthiness of the senses
• the senses do not give us certainty according to Augustine. the mind does. we are certain that we exist and that we think (even if we think wrongly)
• we find other certain truths in our minds that cannot change and do not depend on the senses or the material world
• we also find moral truths
• Eternal goods (ex. the value of life) are better than temporal good
• moral truths are eternal
• knowledge cannot be caused by changing sensible things (ex knowledge of eternal good cannot be caused by temporal and changing things)
• our minds are not the source of knowledge for they are also contingent
• the mind discovers and submits to and is ruled by truth rather than creating it
• we discover immutable, necessary and eternal truth above the human mind
