  • Leaders present at Yalta conference.
    Roosevelt, Stalin and Churchill.
  • This conference took place in February 1945, still before the defeat of Germany in the second world war. Yalta is located in Crimea.
  • At Yalta, it was agreed that Germany would be split into 4 zones, occupied by the three superpowers and one other country, France.
    Germany was expected to pay 20 billion in reparations and half of this was to go to the Soviet Union.
    The Nazi party was to be banned and war criminals prosecuted.
    The UN was also to be set up, with the first meeting 25 April 1945.
    • Only Russia, Ukraine and Belarus admitted rather than all 16 satellite states.
  • Additionally at Yalta, Stalin agreed to join war agreed to join war against Japan.
    Stalin agreed future government of eastern European countries would have free elections and that in Poland borders would be returned to how they were in 1921, with free elections. (gains for Soviet Union)
  • Changes to Relations
    Roosevelt and Stalin happy about free elections and UN.
    Poland had been a troubling issue to solve, however while Stalin had liked the idea of free elections there, hoping this would bring about a communist government, Churchill supported the non-communist London Poles.
