Consequences

• The Berlin Blockade and Airlift confirmed the divisions of Germany and Berlin and led to the establishment of the Federal republic of Germany (FRG) and the German Democratic republic (GDR)

  • FGR owned by West
  • GDR owned by East

  The events greatly increased East-West rivalry

  It led to the creation of NATO
• Formation of West Germany

  23 May 1949: 3 days after end of blockade - the USA, Britain and France merge to form the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG)

  14 August 1949: Germans in the West elect new government - the Bundestag

  15 September 1949: Konrad Adenauer made first democratically elected chancellor

  New capital at Bonn

  The 3 Western controlled zones of Berlin continued
• Formation of East Germany

  October 1949: Stalin creates German Democratic Republic (GDR)

  Only the communist bloc recognise it as a country
