stigma

Cards (6)

  • Many feminists are stigmatised as feminism is often associated with strong, forceful and angry women who often bash men.
  • Alongside this negativity, some men feel threatened by feminism as it means that they will lose their “power”.
  • If the true meaning of feminism can be highlighted, then many men will likely be more supportive of the movement.
  • To those accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression.
  • Due to the stigma around feminism, many people are opposed to the idea. However, in my own opinion, I believe that anti-feminism is a direct form of misogyny. If feminism is gender equality, and you aren’t a feminist, then you don’t believe men and women should be equal.
  • For example, frequently repeated platitudes are stereotypical straightjackets that stifle change in society, instead of “boys will be boys” it should be “boys should be held accountable for their actions” otherwise these girls and boys will grow up thinking that your gender automatically makes you eligible to be treated differently. Without educating the younger generation, how can we ever expect to progress forward as an equal society?
