Pressure

Cards (6)

  • Pressure in Solids
    Pressure = Force/Area
    A small area has a higher pressure
  • Pressure in Liquids and Gases
    In a bottle full of water the pressure is lower at the top than at the bottom, the particles exerted more pressure at the bottom as there is more depth.
  • Collapsing Can: the can has cold water at the start and then the can is heated and the particles gain energy some particles get enough energy to escape as steam the particles still there push against the inside of the can. The can was turned upside down and placed in an iced bowl of water and the can collapsed in on itself the particles lose their energy and reformed a layer of water at the bottom.
    Atmospheric pressure (due to the particles surrounding the can) pushed the sides inward at great speed making the can collapse
  • Pressure and Moments
    Effort - This is the force applied to a lever to cause the turning effect and lift the weight.
    Load - This is a weight that needs to be lifted by the lever.
    Force Multiplier - This is something which enabler a small force, most levers do this.
    Pivot - This is the fixed part of the lever, around which the turning effect happens.
    A moment is a turning force.
    Moment(NM)=force(N)x distance from pivot(m)
  • The principle of moments is that when some thing is balanced the total clockwise movement around a point equals the total anti-clockwise movements around that same point.
  • Levers: A device that allows a force to be applied to a load without the load moving. A long bar that pivots is a lever. Long levers make it easier to lift heavy loads
