  • Economy: Sean Lemass promoted a new economic policy called the “First Programme of Economic Expansion”. He encouraged exports and gave tax reports/grants to foreign industries to attract them to set up factories in Ireland.
  • Results of Economic Expansion Programme: employment rose, emigration fell, people’s living conditions rose, population grew
  • Education: Donogh O’Malley was the minister for education. New schools were built and old ones were refurbished. He made secondary school education free as well as school transport. School courses were also improved, they had a great focus on science.
  • Social change: Ireland opened up to new ideas, more tourists, first shopping centres built, RTE was set up and Late Late Show discussed controversial topics (like contraceptive pills and corporal punishment)
  • Ways Catholics were discriminated (in Northern Ireland): the allocation of houses by councils favoured protestants and only people who owned property could vote. And the allocation of jobs in civil services and local councils favoured Protestants
