Behavioural characteristics of phobias

    • Panic- behaviours includes crying, screaming or running away in response to the presence of the phobic stimulus. Children may react differently by freezing, clinging or having a tantrum
    • Avoidance- Effort to prevent coming into contact with the phobic stimulus e.g phobia of public toilets may have to limit the time spent outside or not going to the toilet at all
    • Endurance- Alternative behaviour to avoidance. Person chooses to remain in the presence of the phobic stimulus.
