Rate of Reaction

Cards (12)

  • The rate of reaction is how fast a reaction happens.
  • Rate of Reaction = amount of reactant used OR amount of product formed / time
  • Testing for rate: Precipitation
    1. Place a flask on top of a black cross
    2. Start a timer, before mixing 2 reactants in the beaker
    3. Keep mixing until the black cross is no longer visible, then stop the timer
    4. Measure the time, before repeating and calculating a mean
  • Testing for rate: Change in mass
    1. Measure the mass of a solution during a reaction, as gas is given off
Do experiment in a fume cupboard to prevent any danger.
  • Testing for rate: Volume of Gas given for
Use a gas syringe to measure the amount of volume of a gas given off during an experiment.
The more gas given off in a set time interval, the faster the reaction.
  • The higher the SA of a reactant, the faster the reaction.
  • The higher the temperature, the faster the rate of reaction.
  • The higher the pressure, the faster the rate of reaction.
  • A catalyst increases the rate of a reaction.
  • A catalyst reduces the amount of Activation energy required.
  • Enzymes are biological catalysts.
  • The volume of a catalyst doesn't change during a reaction.
