3.3.7 Optical Isomerism

• Optical Isomerism is a form of stereoisomerism and occurs when there is a chiral carbon centre
• A mixture of equal amount of enantiomers is a racemic mixture
• An asymmetric carbon atom is chiral and gives rise to enantiomers which are non-superimposable and rotate plane polarised light in opposite directions
