  • Charity = caritas (in Latin) – Theological
    virtue
    • Definition: the theological virtue by which we love God above all things for his own sake, and our neighbor as ourselves for the love of God
    • Virtue = A good moral habit or trait
    • Theological Virtue: They cannot be obtained by human effort alone, but are infused by God into a person.
  • What is Jesus trying to teach us about love
    in the GREATEST COMMANDMENT?
    • Jesus uses this to explain the unlimited nature of love.
    • Our neighbour is anyone in need of love and mercy, not just someone within our community.
    • To truly love, we must look beyond the confines of our own community and treat everyone as we ourselves who would like to be treated.

    • Meet Basic needs and aid individuals
    • Short-term

    • Social Justice:
    • Remove root causes and improve structures
    • Long term
  • CWM - To feed the hungry
    • Giving food to a homeless person.
    • Donating food to a food drive/food bank.
    • Volunteering to serve food in a shelter or home for those in need.
    • Donating money to buy food for the poor.
    • Shopping for groceries, helping with the cooking, doing dishes for your family and those at home.
  • CWM - To give drink to the thirsty
    • Donating water to shelters or in an emergency situation.
    • Giving money to a charitable organization who provides access to clean and safe drinking water.
  • CWM - To clothe the naked
    • Bring clothes to a shelter or a needy family or clothing drive.
    • Providing gloves, hats, etc. for those who are homeless especially during the winter.
    • Collect baby items for moms in need.
    • Doing laundry, etc. for one own’s family.
  • CWM - To shelter the homeless
    • Working and supporting a homeless shelter.
    • Bringing others to one’s home at a time of fire, floods or other
    • disaster.
    • Hosting refugees.
    • Volunteering for organizations that build homes for people such as Habitat for Humanity
  • CWM - To comfort the sick
    • Visiting someone in the hospital or nursing home.
    • Visiting someone who is sick at home or senior citizens.
    • Running an errand for a senior citizen or sick person.
    • Asking a priest to visit the person, and ensuring someone they receive communion and the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.
  • CWM - To visit the imprisoned
    • Visiting prisoners and sending care packages.
    • Fighting for humane treatment for those in prison.
    • Helping to care for the families of the imprisoned.
    • Helping those “imprisoned” by loneliness, mental illness,etc.
  • CMW - To bury the dead
    • Going to funeral and funeral visitations
    • Treating cemeteries with respect
  • SWM - To admonish the sinner
    • Make another realize how bad there sin is.
    • Trying to keep him/her out of sin or occasions of sin and/or trying to get them to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
    • If we think it may make the person worse, we do not correct directly but show him/her indirectly by our example.
  • SWM - To instruct the ignorant
    • To help others learn the truth of our Christian faith, so that we may save their souls and to be happy with God in heaven.
    • This should be done with kindness and merciful love.
    • We must deepen our own faith and pray daily in order to instruct others in faith.
  • SWM - To counsel the doubtful
    • Help others to be certain about what they should do to love and serve God.
    • Should do this with patience but don’t abandon others with their doubts.
  • SWM - To comfort the sorrowful
    • To walk and accompany one who is suffering and facing sorrow.
    • Do not do anything that would cause a person to unnecessarily face more suffering.
  • SWM - To bear wrongs patiently
    • When we are the victims of another’s thoughtlessness or carelessness, our initial response should not be to lash out mercilessly.
    • A continual effort to be less critical of others even when they have hurt us or seem thoughtless and careless.
  • SWM - To forgive all injuries.
    • To forgive others who have hurt us in any way, even if they hurt us deliberately.
    • If we fail to forgive, it causes us even further hurt.
  • SWM - To pray for the living and the dead
    • Praying for those who have died as if they can be saved by our prayers.
    • To pray for the needs of others who are living – by mentioning the people’s names and need.
