  • Compliance is the least permanent and least superficial change.
    An individual changes their beliefs and behaviour in public, to fit in with the group, but reverts back to their original behaviour/ belief in private, when group pressure stops.
  • Conformity is the changes in individuals behaviour and/ or beliefs because of real or imagined group pressure
  • Compliance is linked to normative social influence
  • Types of conformity;
    1. compliance
    2. identification
    3. internalisation
  • Internalisation is the most deep and permeant change, changes in beliefs/behaviour in private and public, take groups belief and accepts it into their own conditions(internalise them). Behaviour still lasts when majority are no longer present. Linked to informational social influence.
  • Identification involves possible private as well as public acceptance. An individual look to a group for guidance and adjust their behaviour/belief because the group is desirable and they take on a role within the group. When group is no longer seen as valuable, behaviour may revert back.
  • Identification involves elements of both compliance and internalisation.
