  • Cotyledon: the embryonic first leave(s) of plants
  • Monocot characteristics
    • One cotyledon
    • fibrous root system
    • narrow leaves with parallel veins
    • have flowers in groups of 3
    • scattered vascular bundles
  • Eudicots characteristics,
    • two cotyledon
    • leg or tap root system (branching off a main root)
    • broad leaves with a network of veins
    • flowers in multiples of 4 or 5
    • a ring of vascular bundles
  • Radicle: the embryonic root
  • Plumule: the embryonic leaves
  • Epicotyl: the embryonic stem
  • Endosperm: The food storage portion of the seed. It is made up of starches and proteins the seed will use as it grows.
  • Seed coat: protects the embryo
  • coleoptile: sheath enclosing the epicotyl (shoot) & protecting it from soil
  • Majority of flowering plants are Eudicots
    • The Epicotyl is the part of the stem above the cotyledon (Prefix "Epi-" means "Above" or "On top of").
    • The Hypocotyl is under the cotyledon (Prefix "Hypo-" means "below" or under")
