metals and non-metals

Cards (3)

  • When metal atoms react, they lose electron(s) from their outer shell
This creates ions with a positive charge
  • general properties of metals:
    • Good conductors of heat
    • Malleable
    • Sonorous (produce a ringing sound when struck)
  • Metals are very strong, as the ions are held together by metallic bonds.
They also tend to be malleable, which means they can bend without breaking.
Non-metals, in contrast, break easily, and so are said to be brittle
