  • SSL Certificates:
    SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. These products are designed to help secure websites and online communication.
  • SSL Certificates:
    SSL certificate encrypts all information transmitted to and from your website, ensuring it is protected from third parties attempting to access it.
  • SSL Certificates:
    If you have an SSL certificate, your site's URL will start with the prefix "https" and a padlock icon will be displayed in the browser bar, showing your visitors your site is secure and their data is safe.
  • SSL Certificates:
    Pages that are protected with SSL receive better search engine rankings, and are more likely to be trusted by visitors.

    Standard SSL is designed to secure a single domain name.

  • SSL Certificates:
    IONOS offers three different types of SSL products:
    • SSL Starter
    • SSL Business
    • SSL Premium
  • Types of SSL Certification Validation:
    1. DV = Domain Validated (SSL Starter)
    2. OV = Organization Validated (SSL Business and SSL Business Wildcard)
    3. EV = Extended Validated (SSL Premium)
  • SSL Installation Types:
    • Managed by IONOS / IONOS-Managed SSL Certificates
    • Managed by Client / User-Managed SSL Certificates
  • Setting Up SSL (Certificate Type):
    • Use with my own server -> Unmanaged SSL
    • Use with my 1&1 website -> Managed SSL
  • Setting Up User-Managed SSL:
    • The option to download the private key will only appear once in the next page after clicking on Set up SSL
    • Make sure to download it and always keep it secure in local drive
    • Once you downloaded the Private key you will need to upload it in your Server
    • In an example we will upload the private key and assign the SSL to a domain
    • Upload the Private Key download from 1&1 CP
    • Upload the SSL Certificate (.CER) download from 1&1 CP
  • Troubleshooting SSL Issues:
    1. Check the site via https
    2. Check HLT if domain is assigned to an SSL
    3. Check DNS record of the assign domain
    4. For IONOS-Managed SSL (A-record & Name Server should be pointing to us)
    5. Check if SSL is working in the domain
    6. For both Managed & Unmanaged, let the customer reissue the SSL certificate in 1&1 Control Panel. 
    7. For Unmanaged that does not offer reissue, advise customers to choose revoke OLD SSL certificate instead.
