  • Dorsal: Toward the back or spine. E.g. The vertebral column is dorsal to the aorta.
  • Anterior: Toward the ventral side. e.g. The sternum is anterior to the heart.
  • Posterior: Toward the dorsal side. e.g. The kidneys are posterior to the liver
  • Superficial: Near the surface, close to the skin. e.g. The skin itself is superficial to everything else.
  • Cephalic: Toward the head or superior end. e.g. The brain develops from the cephalic end of the neural tube.
  • Rostral: Toward the forehead or nose. e.g. the forebrain is rostral to the brainstem.

  • Superior: Above. e.g. The heart is superior to the diaphragm.
  • Inferior: Below. e.g. The liver is inferior to the diaphragm.
  • Medial: Toward the median plane. e.g. The heart is medial to the lungs.
  • Lateral: Away from the median plane. e.g. The eyes are lateral to the nose.
  • Proximal: Closer to the point of attachment or origin. e.g. The elbow is proximal to the wrist.
  • Distal: Farther away from the point of attachment or origin. e.g. The fingers are distal to the elbow.
  • Ipsilateral: belonging to or occurring on the same side of the body (right or left). e.g. The liver is ipsilateral to the liver.
  • Contralateral: On the opposite sides of the body (right or left). e.g. The spleen is contralateral to the liver.
