What are the causes of evil
Original sin
Devil
Character development (Hick)
Free will (
irenaen theodicy
)
It doesn’t exist (
Augustinian theodicy
)
Its transcendent to us
What are different views on the devil
Catholic: originally made good by god but turned evil and caused evil on earth
Protestant: inherently evil and used to tempt humans as they have free will
What is the Irenaen theodicy
Evil exists to give the option of good or evil as humans have
free will
so allows humans to develop their soul
What is the Augustinian theodicy
Evil
doesn’t exist it’s just the
absence
of
good
What did Hick say about evil
It gives us the chance to develop which wouldn’t be possible in a perfect world - the
soul making process
Explain the fall of mankind
Adam and Eve ate the apple because they were given free will
The apple gave them knowledge of good and bad so “sin entered the world through man and death through sin”
This lead to all of mankind being aware of good and evil creating evil in the world
What is the inconsistent triad
God can’t be
omnibenevolent
and
omnipotent
in an
evil
world so if god does exist he his an evil being
Describe the story of job
The
devil
tells god that even thought job is righteous he is only doing it because god favours him sp god allowed the devil to inflict evil on him.
The devil takes away everything job has and job is left distraught questioning god but still has faith in Him
God
intervenes and tells job to be brave and tells him the details of his creation
Job
understands from this that the cause of suffering is beyond him which god was pleased with so gave him
double
of what he had before
What is the message of the job story
the cause of evil is beyond
human understanding
so when we are suffering we must maintain our
faith in god
in order to be given
grace
