4.2 Acid-base titrations

Cards (2)

  • In an acid-base titration
    • a solution of a known concentration is reacted with a solution of unknown concentration
    • very specific apparatus is used to measure the volumes of solutions
    • an indicator is used to show the endpoint, when exact neutralisation has taken place
  • Carrying out a titration
    • Use pipette to add 25cm3 of known solution to a conical flask
    • Place flask on white tile and add several drops of indicator
    • Add unknown solution to burette and record initial burette reading
    • Add unknown solution from burette to flask while swirling flask
    • Stop when colour change occurs
    • Measure final burette reading
    • Repeat entire procedure, adding dropwise when approaching the endpoint
    • Repeat until you obtain concordant titres
