• the merciless iced east winds that knive us
• flares confuse our memory of the salient
• but nothing happens
• like twitching agonies of men amongst its brambles
• war lasts rain soaks and clouds sag stormy
• dawn massing in the east her melancholy army attacks once more
• shivering ranks of grey
• pale flakes with fingering stealth come feeling for our faces
• less deadly than the air that shudders black with snow
• back on forgotten dreams and stare snow dazed
• glimpsing the sunk fires glozed. with crusted dark - red jewels
• for love of god seems dying
• for gods invincible spring our love is made afraid
• this frost will fasten on this mud and us
• all their eyes are ice
• pause over half known faces
• the sadness of war
• power of nature
• remains and exposure shows the different types of suffering soldiers face
• exposure and charge of the light brigade shows suffering also
• our brains ache
• so we drowse sun dozed littered with blossoms trickling where the blackbird fusses
