  • late 1950's there was an economic crisis. The crisis was a catalyst for reform and had wider political consequences. Crisis led to an abandonment of corporatism and an eclipse of the Falange. There was a rise of a new group of government officials known as the technocrats. Spanish gov introduced free market economic policies which led to the rapid growth of the Spanish economy. The gov implemented limited social and political reforms during the 1960s. Economic growth led to urbanisation.
  • Growth of tourism. Spain abandoned autarky and opened its borders. Spanish workers began working abroad and tourists, primarily from western Europe, flocked to Spanish beaches. These changes had a political impact, as Spaniards experienced more liberal cultures the demanded more change at home.
