Cards (9)

  • What is the current population of the world?
    8.1 billion
  • What is food security?

Having enough food to feed a population
  • How is increasing birth rate a threat to food security?
As the population grows the amount of food available will have to increase to feed the whole population otherwise food security will be threatened in some developing countries
  • How are changing tastes (food exports) a threat to food security?
Many foods can’t be grown in the UK so a lot of the food we eat is imported from other countries which threatens their food security,, especially if already scarce food is being exported
  • How are new pests and pathogens a threat to food security?
Pests like caterpillars eat food crops and pathogens cause infectious diseases. Both of these factors decrease the crop yield and therefore the amount of food available to eat
  • How does environmental change threaten food security?
Global warming could lead to unpredictable weather and if rainfall patterns change, many countries may not be able to grow enough crops to feed their populations and this could lead to famine
  • How do modern farming methods threaten food security?
Modern farming methods require a great deal of resources. Lots of farmers rely on fertilisers and pesticides to increase their crop yields & farmers producing livestock need to buy food for their animals.
As the global population increases these resources become more expensive and some countries may not be able to pay the increased cost, threatening food security
  • What is needed to increase long term food security?

Sustainable methods to feed everyone on earth
  • How do conflicts threaten food security?
During wars farming may be disrupted and imports of food may not be possible. War can also threaten the reliable supply of water which can cause famine
