During Ray rist (1970) study of American kindergardens he found that the teacher used information about children's home background and appearance to place them in groups, with each group at a different table
those viewed as fast learners were labelled as tigers who tended to be m/c with a clean appearance. they were placed at the closest table to the teacher and gave them the most encouragement.
the two other groups who were labelled as cardinals or clowns were placed furthest away. these groups were more likely to be w/c.
they wer given lower level books and less opportunites to show their abilities. eg) they read as a group not individuals
