  • During Ray rist (1970) study of American kindergardens he found that the teacher used information about children's home background and appearance to place them in groups, with each group at a different table
  • those viewed as fast learners were labelled as tigers who tended to be m/c with a clean appearance. they were placed at the closest table to the teacher and gave them the most encouragement.
  • the two other groups who were labelled as cardinals or clowns were placed furthest away. these groups were more likely to be w/c.
    they wer given lower level books and less opportunites to show their abilities. eg) they read as a group not individuals
