many w/cstudents are conscious of that society and school has looked down on them
w/c students symbolic violence leads them to seek alternative ways of creating self worth status and value. they do this be constructing meaningful class identites by investing heavily in styles through consuming branded clothing like nike
style preformances are heavily policed by peer groups and not conforming was social suicide
the right appearance earned symbolic capital and approval from peer groups and brought safety from bullying
nike identies led to conflict with the schools dress code , teachers opposed street syles and viewed them as a threat and as bad taste
students who adopted street styles risked being labelled as rebels
Archer argues that schools m/c habitusstigmatisesw/c students identities
nike identities have a role in w/c students rejection of higher education which they saw as both unrealistic and undesirable
unrealistic
higher education was not made for people like them but for richer, cleverer people. they would not fit in. it was unaffordable and a risky investment
undesirable
higher education did not suit their preferred lifesyle or habitus.
Eg) they did not want to live on student loan bc they wouldn't be able to afford street styles that give them their identity
According to Archer w/c studentsinvestments in nike identities is not only the main reason for education marginalisation but it also expressed their positive preference for a particular lifestyle.
Archer states that w/c students may choose self elimation or self exclusion from education.
if education is not for them they will reject it because it doesn't fit their way of life.
