Ethnicity : Institutional Racism

Cards (3)

  • Institutional Racism
Cline (2002) found that name calling, bullying and exclusions were higher among black Caribbean and black African children than other ethnicities.
  • Institutional Racism
In government research in 2004, Bangladeshi, Pakistani and Indian students in a large comprehensive school in the south of England were interviewed and observed and they found that teachers gave less attention or responsibility to the children, asked them questions less often, offered less support and help and there was more focus on negative behaviour.
  • Institutional Racism
Connelly (1998) suggests that teachers hold stereotypes for children of different ethnicities; for example black Caribbean children were seen as having low career aspirations, lower academic ability and more likely to be in trouble outside of school whereas Asian Indian children were seen as ambitious, with higher ability and more likely to be supported by parents at home.
