  • Radical Feminists
    Radical feminism first emerged in the early 19705. It’s key concept is patriarchy, which literally means rule by fathers.

    For them, patriarchal oppression is personal and direct. It occurs not only in the public domain of work and politics but also in the private domain of family, domestic labour and social relationships.

    Radical feminists, see the personal as political, a sexual relationship between a man and a woman is personal, but it is also political because one individual (male) is dominating the other (female). According to radical feminists all types of personal relationships between the sexes are political because men dominate women through them, radical feminists refer to these power relationships as sexual politics.

    Feminists argue that political patriarchal power is exercised in these personal relationships through the threat of sexual or physical violence. This has the effect of controlling all women. Brownmiller notes the fear of rape is a powerful deterrent against women going out alone at night.
