Family : Changes in Childhood - Ethnicity

Cards (2)

  • Ethnicity
The experience of childhood is affected by the ethnic background of the child, however the patterns are complex. Certain ethnic groups have higher rates of poverty, for example, among Pakistani and Bangladeshi children. There have been issues raised about the way in which some ethnic groups prepare their children for education, such as African-Caribbean boys (more on this in the chapter on education). However, there is a growing view that it is impossible to generalise about the experiences of particular ethnic groups as experiences vary so enormously.
  • In addition to social class, ethnicity and gender, the location the child is born into has a massive effect on the experience of childhood. You could discuss the use of children in warfare or how children are treated like vermin in some cities.
