Crime and deviance

• Chivalry thesis:

  The criminal justice system are less harsh on women seen as less bad
• Strain theory:

  When individuals do not have the legitimate means to achieve goals of society

  Crimes such as domestic violence not taken seriously

  Females criminals seen as double deviants as they go against law and expectations

  Ruling class creates laws benefitting them

  Working class targeted and more likely to appear in Crime statistics
• Interactionalists

  act only seen as criminal or deviant if Labelled by society

  Called a self fulfilling prophecy gaining a master status

  May get into a deviant career and join criminal subcultures (merton)
• Subcultrual theories

  Criminal Subcultures involves young males with behaviour which goes against society's norms and showing anti-social acts

  Cohen- working class boys experience status frustration and fight back against society
• Functionalist

  Crime is inevitable and universal

  Occurs when individuals can't achieve the goals of society
