Male Reproductive System

Cards (12)

  • Sperms are made in oval structures called ''testes''
  • The testes are located outside the body cavity in sac called the ''scrotum''
  • Muscular contractions propel newly formed sperm from the testes to the ''epididymis'', a comma shaped structure attached to the testes.
  • The sperm's head, ''acrosome'' change shape slightly, and the term loses cytoplasm and becomes somewhat smaller.
  • Mature sperm cells leave the epididymis and pass into the vas deferens for storage.
  • The term ejaculate means ''to discharge suddenly''
  • The sperm cells pass three glands that secrete liquid substances. These substances, when mixed with sperm, are collective called ''semen''
  • The prostate gland lies just below the bladder. During ejaculation, this gland adds a milky fluid to the sperm.
  • Attached to the back wall of the bladder are two seminal vesicles. Through a tube called ''ejaculatory duct'', the seminal vesicles add a mucuslike fluid to the sperm. This fluid contains the monosaccharide(simple sugar) fructose.
  • Two pea sized glands called ''cowper's glands'' release a mucuslike lubricant substance.
  • After the sperm have combined with the seminal fluid, they leave the body through a tube called the ''urethra''. The urethra passes through the penis. The function of the penis is to transfer seminal fluid to the female reproductive system.
  • The penis contains 3 cylindrical structures made of a spongy tissue called ''cavernous tissues'' When cavernous tissue is filled with blood, the penis becomes stiff. This stiffness is called ''erection'' makes it possible for the penis to enter the female reproductive system.
