  • Describe the relationship between a perceived and an actual norm
Perceived- based on what people think others believe and do
Actual- people’s real beliefs and actions
The gap between these two is called a misperception and correcting this misperception is called a social norms intervention
  • Example of social change through majority influence? (Social norms interventions?)
Most ppl don’t drink and drive
    • Montana
    • 20.4% adults reported drinking and then driving in same hour
    • 92% respondents from a survey believed maj drink and drive
    • After releasing message that most don’t, (4/5) driving after drinking was reduced by 13.7%
  • AO3 for social change?
    • ☹️ v gradual- humans more likely to conform to maj position than engage in SC, as it’s against norm so it takes too long
    • ☹️ being seen as weird limits min influence- maj avoid min because don’t want to be seen as deviant
    • 😄 SNIs work (drink and drive) for maj, suffragettes for min
    • ☹️ doesn’t always work- Dejong campaigning to reduce alcohol usage on 14 diff college campuses. No reports of reduced consumption
  • Explain the concept of social change
    • if someone is exposed to a persuasive argument under certain conditions they can change their views to match the minority
