    • Means statistical infrequency is useful in diagnostic and assessment processes
  • Unusual characteristics can be positive
    • IQ scores above 130 are classed as abnormal as they are statistically infrequent but they are not regarded as needing treatment
    • Means it can be a part of defining abnormality but never it’s sole basis

    • BUT there’s a social stigma attached to labels that may hold them back - labelling someone as abnormal can do more harm then good
