The digestive system breaks down food into tiny particles which are absorbed into the blood.
These particles provide energy for the body to grow, repair itself and remain healthy.
Food is broken down by enzymes produced by glands within the walls of the stomach and small intestine.
Digested food passes through the large intestine where water is removed from it.
Mouth- teeth break down food into small pieces. Broken up food is mixed with enzymes in saliva. The enzymes start to break down carbohydrates into sugars.
Oesophagus- muscular tube that connects the mouth to the stomach
Stomach- produces hydrochloric acid to kill bacteria and digest food
Small intestine- absorbs nutrients from food and secretes bile
Large intestine- absorbs water from undigested food
Anus- the opening of the digestive system that allows undigested food to leave the body
