Equity theory

  • assumes that both partners will have a similar level of costs vs. benefits

  4 principles :

  profit - maximising benefits minimising costs

  distribution - negotiate e.g all cooking, other does all cleaning

  dissatisfaction - seek to realign

  realignment - change their perceptions of rewards and costs, so the relationship seems fair as what’s previously been viewed as a cost may now be considered fair (quit or continue in relationship)
