Respiration

• Respiration is NOT breathing in and out it is the process of converting glucos into energy
• Energy transferred by respiration can’t be used directly by cells so used to make substances called ATP
• ATP — stores energy needed for cells processes
• Respiration is controlled by enzymes that control the rate of reaction. its an exothermic reaction
• Cells can be repaired using glucose but organisms can also break down other organic molecules such as carbohydrates
• Aerobic respiration - glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water
• Anaerobic respiration - glucose -> lactic acid
• Anaerobic means without oxygen and is not best way to transfer energy
• Plant and Fungi produce ethanol and carbon dioxide - glucose -> ethanol + carbon dioxide
• You can use hydrogen carbonate solution to show that living organisms respire
