Neurotransmitter Pathways

Cards (2)

  • Tell me about the cholinergic pathways in the brain.
Well, acetylcholine originates in the basal forebrain; more specifically, the nucleus basalis, the medial septal nucleus, and the nucleus of the diagonal band. It will also enter the pedunculopontine nucleus and the laterodorsal tegmental nucleus.
Once acetylcholine is generated, it will notably travel to the hippocampus and the cerebellum.
  • Tell me about the dopaminergic pathways in the brain.
Dopamine originates in the mesostriatal(substantia nigra to the caudate and the putamen) pathway and the mesolimbocortical pathway(ventral tegmentum area to the accumbens, cortex, and the hippocampus).
Once synthesized, the dopamine will travel into the accumbens, the amygdala, the hippocampus, and into the insula.
