Module 2- Definitions

Cards (11)

  • Isotope
Atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons but differing numbers of neutrons.
  • Relative Atomic Mass
The weighted mean mass of an atom of an element compared with 1/12 the mass of a carbon-12 atom.
  • Acid
    A proton donor.
  • Base
    A proton acceptor.
  • Alkali
A soluble base that releases OH^- ions when dissolved in aqueous solution.
  • A strong acid
An acid where H^+ ions completely dissociate in aqueous solution.
  • A weak acid
An acid where H^+ ions only partially dissociate in aqueous solution.
  • Empirical Formula
The simplest whole number ratio of atoms within a compound
  • Salt
A chemical compound that is formed when the H^+ ion from an acid has been replaced by another metal positive ion
  • Molecular Formula
The actual number of atoms present in a compound
  • Orbital
A region within an atom which holds up to 2 electrons with opposing spins
