Simple distillation

Cards (6)

  • Simple distillation separates a solvent from a solution. It relies on the solvent having a much lower boiling point than the solute. When the solution is heated, the solvent boils but the solute does not. The solvent escapes as a gas from the solution and is then condensed back into the liquid state by a condenser.
  • The mixture can be separated because they have different boiling points.
  • Simple distillation is used I'm labaroties to purify solvents
  • Simple distillation is used in industry to separate crude oil into petrol, diesel etc.
  • During simple distillation, water vapor escapes from tap water leaving dissolved salts behind.
  • Distilled water has no impurities so it is pure.
