Rivers in the 1700s and 1800s were the fastest way of transportation, but the Mississippi River was known for it's size and length. American farmers wanted it for trade and sending goods, because that's how they made money and profit. They specifically wanted to use the New Orleans port. But, the Spanish colony of Louisiana controlled the river and the port. They didn't want America trying to bargain for their lands, so they closed the river off. They opened it up in 1795 because Spain wasn't as profitable as they hoped.
