  • George told leaders to remain neutral, by not taking sides on war and just all around staying out of conflict.
  • Rivers in the 1700s and 1800s were the fastest way of transportation, but the Mississippi River was known for it's size and length. American farmers wanted it for trade and sending goods, because that's how they made money and profit.They specifically wanted to use the New Orleans port. But, the Spanish colony of Louisiana controlled the river and the port. They didn't want America trying to bargain for their lands, so they closed the river off. They opened it up in 1795 because Spain wasn't as profitable as they hoped.
  • Five years after the reopening of the Louisiana port, Spain gave the land to France in secret.

  • Jefferson sends Robert Livingston and James Monroe to find out what Napoleon would think about potentially selling the port to US. The men were authorized to pay $10 Million dollars to buy New Orleans and Florida. Then the bought the whole colony.
  • Livingston and Monroe weren't authorized to buy the Louisiana land, but it would take to long to get permission, so in 1803, they bought it for 15 Million dollars
  • Jefferson was going to amend the Constitution so that they could make the treaty for land
  • Jefferson and Hamilton had a ongoing feud. Jefferson was Secretary of State and Hamilton was the Treasury of State, so they were the only two in the cabinet at the time. Hamilton was a federalist, which meant he belived in national power. Jefferson was a democratic republican which meant that he believed in state powers and rights.

  • Jefferson was very closed minded. He was a racist and didn't believe in gender equality.
