George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Louisiana Purchase

• George was unanimously elected by the Electoral College and was sworn in April 30 1789.
• Unanimous means no opposition or disagreement
• Electoral College is a collection of representatives for each state, most of them being wealthy, educate white men.
• George wrote in his farewell address warnings for our nation and the future office.
• George Washington spent eight years or two terms in office
• Washington wanted to be a symbol of unity
• Unity is being one and united
• Foreign Policy is relations with government in other countries
• George told leaders to remain neutral, by not taking sides on war and just all around staying out of conflict.
• Rivers in the 1700s and 1800s were the fastest way of transportation, but the Mississippi River was known for it's size and length. American farmers wanted it for trade and sending goods, because that's how they made money and profit.They specifically wanted to use the New Orleans port. But, the Spanish colony of Louisiana controlled the river and the port. They didn't want America trying to bargain for their lands, so they closed the river off. They opened it up in 1795 because Spain wasn't as profitable as they hoped.
• Five years after the reopening of the Louisiana port, Spain gave the land to France in secret.
• Napoleon Bonaparte is the leader of France
• After the treaty, France controlled the Mississippi River
• US talked about war with Spain and France
• Jefferson sends Robert Livingston and James Monroe to find out what Napoleon would think about potentially selling the port to US. The men were authorized to pay $10 Million dollars to buy New Orleans and Florida. Then the bought the whole colony.
• Livingston and Monroe weren't authorized to buy the Louisiana land, but it would take to long to get permission, so in 1803, they bought it for 15 Million dollars
• Jefferson was going to amend the Constitution so that they could make the treaty for land
• Jefferson and Hamilton had a ongoing feud. Jefferson was Secretary of State and Hamilton was the Treasury of State, so they were the only two in the cabinet at the time. Hamilton was a federalist, which meant he belived in national power. Jefferson was a democratic republican which meant that he believed in state powers and rights.
• Hamilton and federalists established a National Bank
• Jefferson was very closed minded. He was a racist and didn't believe in gender equality.
