  • Matthias Jakob Shleiden (1830s): Worked with plants to see that all living organisms were made of cells. Also saw that plants start off as single cells.
  • Theodore Schwann (1830): worked with animals to see that all living organisms are made out of cells
  • Hybrids: the offspring that result from hybridization mating
  • monohybrid cross: cross between two individuals with different phenotypes for a single trait
  • gene: a unit of heredity which is transferred from a parent to offspring and is held to determine some characteristic of the offspring
  • allele: different versions of the same gene
  • genotype: specific allele composition of an individual
  • phenotype: outward appearance of an individual
  • Mendel's contributions: inheritance is particulate, an individual has two copies of every inheritance particle (gene), one from each parent
