Opposition in the 1980s

  • While the RAF continued its activities in the 1980s, political protest found a legitimate outlet in the emergence of the Green Party - environmental issues and peace campaigns found a resonance in the FRG. There were protests and demonstrations, but they didn't threaten the stability of the political system. Therefore, this showed a testament to the stability and support for the political system itself.
  • Protests against the use of nuclear power gathered momentum in the FRG as a result of Chernobyl in the USSR in April 1986. The Greens had led campaigns against the use of nuclear power previously but the SPD had also began to oppose it. Mass protests focused on the nuclear plant under construction at Wackersdorf in Bavaria. Eventually, in May 1989, construction stopped - although, this was due to the cost rather than the protests.
