Resistance to Social influence

Cards (6)

  • Social support - People can resist pressures to conform obey when they receive social support. This is because having an ally gives us confidence and support making it possible to resist the pressures and remain independent in our behaviour.
Conformity - Individual must identify with the ally and see them as a role model of independent behaviour.
Obedience - Ally acts as a model of dissent for the individual to copy, resist obedience and act from their own conscience.
Leads to a diffusion of responsibility and individuals feel less responsible.

  • Locus of control - A personality trait which refers to a persons perception of personal control over their behaviour. There is a scale with internal at one end and external at the other.
  • Internal locus of control - Believe what happens is based on personal decisions and effort and trust their own judgement over others. Individuals with a strong internal locus of control are more likely to remain independent in their behaviour and rely less on the opinion of others.
  • External locus of control - Believe what happens is down to external factors such as luck or fate and put more trust into judgement. Take personal responsibility for their actions so are less likely to remain independent so are less able to resist social influence.
