  Newlands Act - provides federal funds to protect and conserve land
• Roosevelt runs two terms (he could run more) and endorses Taft to be the next president 


  But Taft is less-liked than Roosevelt
• Taft

  • Passes more trust suits than Roosevelt but they are less successful
  • Changes the federal workday to 8 hours

  Taft's foreign policy

  • Payed to have power in other countries
  • Thought it would benefit foreign relations
• • Taft runs one term
  • Teddy wants Republicans to elect him instead of Taft but they refuse
  • Roosevelt creates his own party (Bull Moose Party)
  • Wilson is elected as the Democratic Candidate


  Roosevelt get's more votes than Taft but Wilson wins overall
• Wilson's Economic Policy

  • Clayton Antitrust Act - more expansive than Sherman Antitrust Act
  • Reduced Tariffs substantially
  • 16th Amendment - established Federal Income Tax
• Progressive Era ended at the start of WWI
• Wilson's Foreign Policy

  • Ends Dollar Diplomacy
  • Reduces tolls on Panama Canal
  • Jones Act - 1916, Promises the Philippines their independence
  • US sends military into Haiti because of violence and Haiti becomes a protectorate of the US
  • Purchases the Virgin Islands
• • Mexico (with help of the US) overthrows their President and replaces him with Victoriano Huerta
  • Leads to many Mexicans moving to America but America hates that
  • Pulitzer and Hearst (who both owned land in Mexico) write about this a lot
  • Wilson fires Ambassador who helped Mexico and places and embargo
  • US aids rebels like Pancho Villa; Huerta resigns and is replaced by guy the US likes more
• • Pancho doesn't like the guy who replaces Huerta so he comes into America (Texas) and kills Americans (Tampino Incident)
  • Wilson sends John Pershing to Mexico to take out Pancho but the whole things fizzles out because Pershing needs to join WWI
